Roc'ella rocks College Town with music, fashion

Roc’ella, a funky music and fashion event inspired by the West Coast’s ever-popular Coachella celebration, debuted at College Town on Saturday. The happening was birthed through a collaboration between Heather Knowles, founder of Roc City Creative, and Amy Riposo, founder of Rochester A-List, both visionaries in the area of event planning and management. Riposo described Roc’ella as a "boho-style festival where music, fashion and art are incorporated into one event.”

College Town, widely hailed as one of Rochester’s leading hot spots, was specifically chosen as the hosting ground for this year’s event. “The retail end of College Town is not as developed as the other areas, particularly food, so we wanted to invite some of the boutiques here to have a presence and provide a pop-up market place so people could shop and get to know them,” shared Riposo.

To further tie in the theme of fashion, Knowles decided to tack on a fashion show to the event’s calendar . While Roc’ella was a free event, fashion show tickets were available for a small fee of $15. Ticket sales from the fashion show event were donated to the Golisano Children’s Hospital. “With proceeds benefitting the hospital, it is a great way to tie in the community and it gives all of us a way to give back. We have several Miracle Kids here today – those are children in a certain age group who are patients at Strong – plus 30 models from around Rochester and five boutiques featured in the fashion show.”

The overall mission of Roc’ella was described by Knowles as “getting everybody in one place, especially new students and the community in general, and showcasing the very best of what Rochester has to offer.” With event vendors and entertainment ranging from consignment shops and juice bars to jewelry makers, specialty food shop owners, graffiti illustrators, henna tattoo artists and local musicians, it is safe to say Roc’ella hit the bull’s-eye on its first attempt.
